You build knowledge from what already exists and you get to have a monopoly on the idea as a reward.<\/p>\n<p>Working as a patent engineer means that you get to know what the future may look like.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you actually do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am <strong>learning by doing<\/strong>. Depending on the tasks available, you will work on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Patent prosecution: writing a patent, defending the patent, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Anteriority search: understanding the state of the art, does this invention already exist?<\/li>\n<li>Mapping: seeing the trends in a market, what the competitors are doing, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Many other tasks!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the first years, my work requires the supervision of an experienced patent attorney. Therefore, I learn a lot about the practical aspects and the strategic part of a patent with her\/him.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from that, you have formal training to support your day-to-day work. This helps you get a better understanding of the legal aspects of a patent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you like in your job?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>variety of task<\/strong>s. Facing innovative aspects and understanding the technical problem is also something I enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>I learned that it is not just about writing a patent, it is also about the client\u2019s needs. Therefore, client interaction and making sure to provide the best advice are key.<\/p>\n<p>What I also like at Calysta is that you are encouraged to take responsibility and propose ideas to improve processes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Would you recommend it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you like learning and are curious, then it could be a good match.<\/p>\n<p>It is a job that makes use of your scientific background, and you will learn the patent law aspect on the job.<\/p>\n<p>It is also a commitment because, for the first three years, you will need to prepare for annual exams to ensure that you have acquired the proper patent law knowledge, so it is something to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, I would definitely recommend it if you have the right image of what the job will look like.
